• 1.0 out of 5 stars from Moisio -- Intermittently Awful : Leave aside the ridiculous dialogue. Perhaps there were people who actually spoke like that, although I doubt it. Leave aside the melodramatic, self-indulgent characters. Presumably Lawrence portrays them thus intentionally. And leave aside, I guess, the apparently groundbreaking sexuality that seems to be crucial to securing its place in the canon. I'll even acknowledge Lawrence's great gift for capturing quickly changing moods in the characters' indirect speech. ( Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2019 )

Amazon is coy as to what text is used; it's the Cambridge edition, removing some changes that DHL apparently made under pressure from his publisher. • 2.0 out of 5 stars from Capless -- More boring than Moby Dick. : Decided to try reading a few classics. Why does Lawrence have so many admirers? This seems to be considered his best work. I can't say I understand that at all. The dialogue is unreal, did anyone ever really speak like this? This was a tough slog to get through. There just isn't anything about the people of circumstances to pull a reader in. They're not a likable or sympathetic bunch. Not a thing is done or said that the other characters don't feel infringes on them in some way. No I didn't even faintly enjoy this book but I did find one that was more boring than Moby Dick ( Reviewed in the United States on July 18, 2020 )
• 4.0 out of 5 stars from Daniel J. Carey -- A window into the heart and mind. : I've just finished 3 of Lawrence's greatest novels: The Rainbow, Sons and Lovers and Women in Love. Truly an incredible journey. The prose this man composes into his narrative are both intensely creative and insightful. As the reader, you truly feel that you are living and experiencing the emotions and thoughts of Ursula, Birkin, Gudrun and Gerald. Thorough the arch of their relationships we see Lawrence emerge as a man truly before his time. He wrote a series of books that transcend the rigid class boundaries of his day and boldly uncompromising in his expression. A provoking series that challenges my own views and motives. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Michel B -- What do men and women want? : A masterpiece I have read several times. It portrays modern relationshiips undergoing stress from cultural alienation. Purposeless societies generate purposeless people, who may cling to each other in endlessly dissatisfying ways to escape anomie. Some couples make it, nevertheless. I disregard the philosophies that characterize the dialogs. This is not a book of ideas. It is a book of yearning distracted by philosophies, personal histories, and social vacuousness. What do men and women really want? Undistracted presence. Lawrence book is a ballet of emotions shoving the dancers across the floor, and even off it. • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Story lines everywhere! -- Mental calisthenics : Though the story finally gets interesting about halfway in, this book spends far too many paragraphs repeating the same ruminations on the nature of love, relationships, and the nature of the universe. The four protagonists, to my reading, are too similar in personality until far into the book. The author's strange descriptions of contradictory emotions was perplexing. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Kez -- Lawrence’s examination of mortality and what makes life worth living. : Women in Love follows the lives and loves of the Brangwen sisters, Gudrun and Ursula and in particular their relationship with Gerald Crich and Rupert Birkin. • 2.0 out of 5 stars from Touchndance -- Extremely difficult syntax : I bought this because I had enjoyed several of Lawrence's other works, but had not read this one. I found it completely unreadable, and gave up several chapters in. Firstly, he does not obey the usual rules of English sentence structure (for example, switching the usual usage of "a" and "an", or using tenses oddly.) Secondly, he seems so obsessed with describing some mysterious sub-conscious process occurring between characters, that there is little plot in the usual sense, and I could not make sense of the strong feelings going on between the main characters, which seemed totally unrelated to anything that was happening. The dialogue was also unrelated to their feelings. I was very disappointed. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 27, 2020 )
• 4.0 out of 5 stars from David Bisset -- and also men : I have mixed feelings concerning the literary importance of Lawrence. He writes beautifully concerning the natural world, but is depiction of the main characters and his constant wordy interpolations are somewhat tiresome. The novel, of course, was banned because of its overt sexuality. The encounters seem explicit but the words are slippery. It is easy to parody Lawrence. Was he lacking in humour? Lots of caveats, but it has to be conceded that he also wrote like an angel; and the terrible climax of the novel is one of the greatest passages in modern literature. • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Len Scott -- Unintelligible : This version of the book bears little relation to the official version. The book purchased was probably produced by scanning an existing novel and using OCR to produce this version. This has led to many words or phrases being misinterpreted which makes the final version virtually unintelligible and unreadable. Compare the first paragraph with that published in the Illustrated version also on your site and the differences will be immediately obvious. I checked a number of other versions of this classic novel and found most of them to be equally badly extracted. The price is admittedly low but what was issued was not even worth that.
